The Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, by Michael Alpert

This is a long-awaited translation of a definitive account of the Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. Michael Alpert examines the origins, formation and performance of the Republican Army and sets the Spanish Civil War in its broader military context. He explores the conflicts between communists and Spanish anarchists about how the war should be fought, as well as the experience of individual conscripts, problems of food, clothing and arms, and the role of women in the new army. The book contains extensive discussion of international aspects, particularly the role of the International Brigades and of the Soviet Russian advisers. Finally, it discusses the final uprising of professional Republican officers against the Government and the almost unconditional surrender to Franco. Professor Alpert also provides detailed statistics for the military forces available to Franco and to the Republic and biographies of the key figures on both sides.

Review
"This book by Professor Michael Alpert is probably the most exhaustive study of the Popular Army of all those completed until now ... his analysis of the overall development of the Army, its most salient characteristics and particular aspects, is unsurpassed ..."
Carmen Gonzlez Martnez, University of Murcia, Anales de Historia Contemporanea (review of Spanish language edition)

"This revised edition is the best and most readable account of the Spanish Republican Army in any language, fully informed and admirably objective. A unique institutional history."
Stanley G. Payne, Hilldale-Jaume Vicens Vives Professor of History Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison

"This is a thorough and painstaking account of the Republican Army from its pre-Civil War origins to its defeat in 1939, based on years of research in archives, and correspondence and interviews with protagonists. It mobilises a wealth of evidence from primary sources to the latest secondary literature. Its analysis is scrupulously balanced, lucid, and dispassionate."
Sebastian Balfour, Professor Emeritus, Department of Government, London School of Economics and Political Science

"How refreshing [to] find a book that is intensely researched in the primary sources, scrupulously fair in its analysis, and of genuine utility in understanding this complex struggle ... Incisive yet wide-ranging, this book offers a wealth of information and insights ... Indispensable for modern European collections ... Essential. All levels/libraries."
G. P. Cox, Choice

"An outstanding account of the Ejercito popolar republicana ... Professor Alpert gives us a comprehensive, sympathetic, but by no means uncritical look at a surprisingly effective 'improvised' army ... an essential read for anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War or the improvisation of military armies."
Albert Nofi, Strategy Page (strategypage.com)

"Alpert's rich, eminently readable and objective book is a welcome addition to the English-language historiography on the Spanish Civil War. Perhaps its greatest value, however, will not be for historians of Spain, who have been reading and citing his Spanish-language books for over three decades, but in the field of comparative history. Transnational historians will, for example, be able to use the case of the Republican Popular Army to ask more general questions about building and disciplining an armed force during a period of revolution and civil war."
James Matthews, Journal of Contemporary History

A Classic Account of the 'People's Republican Army'
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'Originally published in Spanish in 1977 and revised in 2007, this excellent work and now available in English, Alpert gives us a comprehensive, sympathetic, but by no means uncritical look at a surprisingly effective “improvised” army.

'It opens with an overview of the relationship of the Spanish Army to the nascent Spanish Republic during the early 1930s, the military coup of July 1936 and the start of the civil war. He then describes the birth of the new Republican Army, which grew out of improvised revolutionary militia resistance. Alpert examines the groups that helped form, train, and led the new army, loyal officers and former officers, political commissars, and the anarchists, communists, and other groups, with quick profiles of many of the men involved.

'Sympathetic to the Republic, Alpert is not as ideologically committed as many other writers. He argues that ideology often prevented the army from becoming even more effective than was the case. He is also critical of many of the myths that have come to surround the war, such as the “decisiveness” of the Battle of Guadalajara or the role of the International Brigades in the war, both inflated for propaganda reasons, which have gained wide acceptance by historians.

'Essentially an institutional history of the army, rather than a military history of the war, Alpert gives us enough fighting to explain why things turned out as they did, and often useful analyses of organization, equipment, tactics, and strategy, with comparisons to “Nationalist” practice, and he gives has a good, clear account of the internal rifts that sparked a “civil war within the civil war” during the closing weeks of the struggle.

'Although he might have updated the work even more than is the case, this remains an essential read for anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War or the improvisation of military armies.'

Love letter to a Commissar
By Gerry Fahrenthold
The editorial reviews name this the long awaited English translation of the definitive account of the Republican Army. Given the popularity of study of the SCW, if this text was truly the definitive account, it would have been translated to English long before now. Some of the content may have been new when the Spanish language version came out in 1977, but almost the entire book has been clearly eclipsed by the numerous much better researched books on the SCW which have come out since then. The book is especially weak when it addresses technical issues such as the use of armor and aviation or details such as quantities of arms supplied by the Soviets. To be fair, the information on the establishment of training schools and the attempts to manage staff and promotions is good and not found in such detail elsewhere but this is the only highlight. There is absolutely no discussion of any of the major battles or any insight into Republican strategy. The book suffers from a ridiculously pro-Soviet take on every issue. Probably 10% - 15% of the entire text is about the role of the commissars in the Republican Army. We get details on their insightful, high quality, glossy publications and their commitment to stamp out illiteracy. All of the commissars were apparently really neat, really caring guys who never did anything harsh or violent - think of them as a Soviet Santa Claus. The author also makes straight forward statements of obvious Soviet propaganda talking points. For example, the Soviets had no influence or control of the dreaded SIM, the soviets did not even want to put commissars in Republican Army (it was a Spanish suggestion, of course), the commissars never over ruled unit commanders, the Soviet charges for the weapons supplied in exchange for the Spanish gold reserves was fair, etc. etc. The book has some minimal value and if you are doing exhaustive reading on the SCW it is worth a look but it certainly is not a unique or definitive account of the Republican Army.
