Forgot their audience

This book is directed at people who are going to be working as behavior analysts. This means they spend their time operationally defining behaviors, then measuring behaviors and using what we know about things like reinforcement contingencies to change behavior. If you are going to write a book to help them in their careers I would think you would use the same approach. Some how the authors seem to have forgotten who their intended audience is. The things they suggest are not even close to operationally defined. They give advice that is vague and sometimes blatantly insulting. Examples are dress appropriately, don't be too shy, listen well an so on. If that is the kind of help you need, buy the book. If you want something that addresses actual behavior changes that a behavior analyst might want to make, keep looking.

Beyond the valley of clinical skills

Recently completed a semester using this book as one of the primary texts while teaching a graduate course at Caldwell College entitled "Ethics and Professionalism for Behavior Analysts." Universally, my advanced level behavior analysis grad students all had wished that they had read this book earlier in their careers. They had nothing but praise for it. This text is highly recommended for behavior analysts who assert that their good clinical skills alone will propoel them towards success. They might find that there is a whole new set of skills they had not thought about before!

A very useful self-training book

I was skeptical about the idea of self-training in technical translation, but the book is actually quite helpful. Not that you can train yourself to be an engineer or a rocket scientist by reading the book, of course--but if you are knowledgeable in the fields presented, or determined to learn the basics, the book has the great advantage of giving you feedback for your translation. That is something a self-trained translator almost never gets. Sofer does it through bilingual texts. You translate from Russian to English; then you look at the translation he provides and compare your work. Sofer has useful notes to explain or emphasize the tricky parts. There are four Russian-to-English texts, and four English-to-Russian. Of course, you can "double your money" by using them in the reverse direction. The fields covered, with quite general texts, not super-technical, are industry, law (contracts), finance, and medicine/chemistry.

The book's flaws are mainly 1) some serious garbling of Cyrillic typography--not frequently, but no book publisher should allow something like this to go press; and 2) it is hard to work from, because the volume does not lie flat on a copy stand. I finally came up with the idea of cutting the book out of the spine and punching holes in it for a 3-ring binder. Now it is much easier to work with.

It comes with a CD with names of translation companies, supplementing what is already in an appendix. It is likely that many of these are dated by now, however.

The finest angling entomology ever written.

I'm sitting here looking at the fly fishing books in my collection. If I had to pick out the one that has helped me catch the most trout, it would be Caddisflies. This book, since its publication in the early 1980's, has changed the way people fly fish. Before it came out, caddisflies were a mystery. This is the most important insect on our trout streams, but fly fishermen were using the wrong flies and the wrong tactics -- and, to raise the frustration level even higher, they knew little about the basic life cycle.
Start just with the flies. The Sparkle Pupa series were the first patterns to use Antron (a DuPont tri-lobal fiber) and they mimicked the bright air carried by the emerging insect. These are miracle flies. They'll catch trout after trout, at times when every other patterns fail completely.
Caddisflies is a "dual" book. A wonderful fly fishing book, but also a great scientific work. It is quoted by professional entomologists in their papers. It is a basic volume that all anglers should read.
By the way, my opinion is widely shared. Robert Berls, in his 1989 article in Trout Magazine listing the best fly fishing books of the last thirty years, included Caddisflies and called it the greatest angling entomology of all time.

Detail, detail, detail! No substitute for this book!

Gary LaFontaine died this year. A great shame...but he has left behind a body of work that enriches us all.
This book is where it started: and this is how a skillful observer of nature put his scientific skill to practical application.
Caddis may well be the major trout food (heresy - cry the mayfly lovers) but Mr. LaFontaine has the primary research and the citations to scientific publications to back up his position.
The definitive study of Caddisflies. I've owned it for years. . .and two years ago I was repeatedly skunked by a massive evening hatch of black micro-caddis on a lake in Oregon.
I happened to mention the problem to a guide this last spring. Sure enough, he sent me two sample black micro-caddis (#28) and the page reference from Gary's masterwork where the ANSWER was found. I felt like a fool - I had the answer all along!
Of course, the Emergent Sparkle Pupa, the deep pupa and the use of Antron are brilliant answers to emerging Caddis hatches. They are explained here clearly and they are easy ties - and killing patterns--of Gary's invention.
This is a REFERENCE work as well as a fine how-to book. It has a place in every fiy fisher's library.

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING.

This book is for anyone who wants to understand better why certain patterns work one day and not the next. For all of those died in the wool dry fly fisherman, read this book and you will start fishing below the surface, where most of a trout's diet is taken. This is as much a scientific work as it is a manual on how to take more fish more often. The only negative aspect of this book is that it focuses on the caddis fly (although Mayflies are mentioned). A similar work on Mayflies is needed. All in all though, this is the "Bible" that should be on all of our shelves.

Meredith references Ia Drang, toward the end of the novel, and much of the story actually reads like the famous, We Were Soldiers Once... and Young. That is to say, this book captures some of the pressing realism, heart wrenching tragedy, and gut clenching terror of the first-hand account of a battle in which a single US Air Cav Battalion found itself surrounded by many times its number in the Ia Drang Valley. The writing is good enough that not only do the characters and circumstances seem real but so do the zombies - so much so, that while reading I tended to forget that there really are no zombies.

The way the author plays out the battle to contain the zombie plague, from the political, to the operational and tactical, all the way down to the thoughts of the individuals on the ground, gives the impression of a massive, chaotic effort of men and machines. The lines containing the quarantine zone are far too thin and there are holes that need to be plugged. Communications with many units are down. Police and National Guardsmen are thrown into the fight as fast as they arrive. Helicopters are burning enormous amounts of fuel. Military vehicles are racing from location to location. Crucial cargoes are dumped so troops can be rushed to critical positions. Units are scattered and intermingled. Logistics are a nightmare. The fog of war is thick. Then darkness falls.

And inside the quarantine zone life has become a struggle to survive a zombie infested hell. Well-written characters that you come to care about seek a way to escape the zombie hordes - but Soldiers hem in zombies and desperate civilians alike, and there are dwindling options for the living. Against this backdrop we get to follow the established storylines, and the intrigue from the first novel turns into an uglier, more primal, life-and-death contest to outwit and out manipulate. It is a great continuation from the first in the series.

Bottom line: Holy smokes, this was phenomenal! Do not hesitate to pick it up. It was my favorite Peter Meredith novel yet and if you have read his other stuff you will realize what a statement that truly is!

The author writes at such an exciting pace I feel like I'm burning calories while I'm reading. Great story, characters, action, & plot. The detailing about indecisive politicians reminds me of what we have today. Can hardly wait to see what day 3 brings. Check out the authors other zombie series as well you won't be disappointed.

I Left the New Walking Dead Comic on the Table to Finish This Book First. That Never Happens.

The Apocalypse Crusade 2 War of the Undead picks up right where the first book left off. The "IPs" (zombies) have escaped the medical center and are feeding, while the survivors ponder their fate of unleashing hell on earth. Various levels of government start to get involved in an effort to contain it all, and we all know that the government will predictably screw it up by pontificating, procrastinating, and taking a poll before they'll actually DO anything.

I liked the pace of this book better than the first book (I am a zombie fan, after all). The action just never stopped. I really enjoyed the various points of view from the different groups of people, and found myself really cheering some of them on throughout the book. Meredith pretty much nails the internal workings of the government agencies who are trying to contain the IPs, and it was frustrating to no end. The zombies were pretty interesting as well, and it was intriguing to watch them devolve.

If I had one complaint about this story, it would be about Thuy. She is the epitome of a badass, and I didn't enjoy reading about her in her PTSD form. I can only hope that in Book 3 she comes back and kicks butt - both zombies and people who have betrayed her.
