Very good examples and exercises

This book is very good if you want to learn the basic grammar structures of Dutch. It has lots of examples and exercises, and the explanations are easy to understand. Of course, if you want to acquire fluency, then you would also have to buy an audio course, like Michel Thomas Dutch.

Good, with problems.

This is a handy, up to date overview of Dutch grammar that takes a non-technical approach. It has exercises at the end of each chapter, which help test your grasp of one concept before moving onto the next. So, like it says on the label, it's a mixture of grammar and workbook, which is good for getting a grip on the language without falling asleep (or into a pit of grammatical monsters.)

It's unfortunate, then, that the book is sometimes badly written and doesn't always explain Dutch usage or language concepts very well, which makes the reader do more work than necessary. At other times, like when it describes demonstrative adjectives as a kind of demonstrative pronoun (!), it's totally not clear if the problem is just the need to shield the beginner from unhelpful detail, or whether the author fully grasps the differences.

This may seem like a pedantic and an overly technical criticism for a self-declared "Basic" grammar. Yet when starting a new language, you need crystal clear, accurate explanations in order to avoid confusion, frustration, or learning inaccurate information. (When learning how to cook a cake for the first time, you don't need a detailed discussion of flour-milling methods, or an in-depth look at every type of sugar, which professional chefs might be interested in. If the recipe says that flour and sugar are basically the same, or you need a 'bit' of each, the cake will turn out badly and you might get confused making it.) A little extra detail can add a lot of extra clarity.

In short, while this book is good in many places, I'm not convinced it gives a particularly clear picture in all areas, and that might cause unnecessary problems. Hence three stars out of five: decent, but imperfect. As for alternatives, William Shetter's "Dutch: An Essential Grammar" is better, but also very dry. Bruce Donaldson's "Dutch: A Comprehensive Grammar" (the best Dutch grammar available in English) contains much more detail than you'll need or want first time around, but is very clear and readable (there's even a section on Trendy Spellings). I would recommend using a (library?) copy of the latter to clarify things that seem totally confusing in this Basically good book.

not a textbook

This is not a textbook, but it doesn't purport to be one. College-style textbooks don't seem to exist for less popular languages, so some try to make do with grammars and mindless tourist CDs. The Ooosterhoff grammar is a fast-paced introduction to Dutch grammar, but it lacks readings, vocabularly lists, and extensive drills (i.e., it is not a textbook). To say that it includes a "workbook" is a bit of a stretch; it contains short drills of the type constructed by graduate students for the purpose of taking up space. I agree with another poster that the Michel Thomas CDs are a good way to learn pronunciation (see my review), but an online or paper dictionary is a must when using this grammar, which is replete with undefined vocabulary. I have the Kindle for PC version of this and the Intermediate books; both contain obvious errors (like confusing the words for apples and potatoes); one would think that reporting errors would result in an almost realtime correction, right? Also, don't bother complaining about problems with the Kindle software, because there is only one response, probably from silicon: de-register, then reload. IOW, it's your fault. Although suitable as a grammar, I would guess that a set of CDs on colloquial conversation for business travelers -- not for tourists -- would be a useful addendum. Listening to streaming audio of Dutch talk radio might also be helpful.

Joan Didion doesn't want you to know this...

...but Run River is her finest novel. "Democracy" is excellent, but it is more a tour de force than a novel. Didion was only in her twenties when she wrote Run River, and it is a winner--stylish but never mannered (something you can't say about her subsequent novels), subdued, witty, assured, and filled with Valley (as in the Sacramento Valley) characters with whom Didion was rather obsessively in love. It is a pity that she seems more interested these days in writing about Washington insiders for N.Y.C./L.A. insiders. Everett McClellan, my favorite character in the book, would not have been able to sustain an interest in such figures as Henry Hyde and Kenneth Starr. That Didion can--even if only for the purpose of eviscerating them--is an indication of how far she has strayed from her literary roots. Ah, but what roots they were. Run River is an extraordinary achievement.

A Californian Elegy

This novel is early Didion, wonderfully lyrical and dark, passionate without sentimentality, and beyond conclusions. It is homage to James Jones, to William Faulkner, perhaps a little to John Steinbeck, but mostly to a California now almost vanished. That California is mostly the settlers' California, but it is also a California felt and known aboriginally. She writes, as always, poignantly about things dying away: but the heirs live on and the Californian sun and hills, rivers and floods, carry on- the part of eternity we can know a little of. I liked this book very much, but the reader should be warned it is not a light read and not written as completely in Joan Didion's famously sharp style as her later works.

As Good a First Novel as First Novels Get

This first novel by one of modern America's prose-writing treasures is set in a part of California no one associates with the Golden State: the Sacramento Delta. The emotional and physical geography of the book blend seamlessly. Didion has since critiqued this book herself, in her much later prose reflection on California, "Where I Was From." She's a bit hard on her former self. This is a lucid, hard etched short novel on the same general theme as Tolstoi's "Anna Karenina": that is, how a uniquely unhappy family got that way. Didion is of an old California family. She takes no false pride in that, here or elsewhere. There is not a useless or spongy sentence in the whole book. Writers will be reminded of what they're supposed to be doing when they pick up a pen.

One word: Boring.

This and Book Six rehash the same stuff over and over and over and over. It is like this was written as 20 separate pieces that keep reexplaining all the terms and acronyms each time they are used. It was so BORING.I kept waiting for the story to happen, for something suspenseful, something interesting. Even the one side story that could have been interesting ended in a fizzle.

I rarely review books, and I am an avid SF reader. After how bad book 5 and 6 were, I felt compelled to warn anyone else looking for a good read.

This book is filled with physics, astronomy, cosmology, etc. that approaches verisimilitude. There was one thing that somewhat distracted me...the repetition of information; especially If you read books 1-4.

About the Author
Ronald R. Watson, Ph.D., attended the University of Idaho but graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, with a degree in chemistry in 1966. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Michigan State University in 1971. His postdoctoral schooling in nutrition and microbiology was completed at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he gained 2 years of postdoctoral research experience in immunology and nutrition.

From 1973 to 1974 Dr. Watson was assistant professor of immunology and performed research at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was assistant professor of microbiology and immunology at the Indiana University Medical School from 1974 to 1978 and associate professor at Purdue University in the Department of Food and Nutrition from 1978 to 1982. In 1982 Dr. Watson joined the faculty at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the School of Medicine. He is currently professor of health promotion sciences in the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health.

Dr. Watson is a member of several national and international nutrition, immunology, cancer, and alcoholism research societies. Among his patents he has one on a dietary supplement; passion fruit peel extract with more pending. He continues to do research in animals and in clinical trials on dietary supplements and health including studies using omega-3 fatty acids in heart disease prevention and therapy. For 30 years he was funded by Wallace Research Foundation to study dietary supplements in health promotion. Dr. Watson has edited more than 110 books on nutrition, dietary supplements and over-the-counter agents, and drugs of abuse as scientific reference books. He has published more than 500 research and review articles.
