He attempts to overcome that opposition by reliance on the concepts of supervenience and an evolutionary attractor. In this way, he proposes a new approach in which teleological anthropomorphisms as well as reductionist metaphors are avoided.

The author then presents a theology of nature in which particular attention is given to the immanence of God and to Divine kenosis. Finally, the book offers a theological anthropology, including chapters on the harmonization of paleontology and theological anthropology, the limits of sociobiology, and original sin in relation to scientific knowledge of the human person.

Science, with its discovery of evolution, positively enriches theology. The study of nature improves our knowledge of God.

Archbishop Zycinski argues that both Christian anti-evolutionism and anti-Christian scientism are each regrettable fundamentalisms. The Archbishop rejects both extremes.

This book was just too wordy. The topic is very easy to understand and the facts are there for anyone who wants to search for the truth. This book could do it a lot simpler than it did. I wasn't impressed.

Very helpful commentary to study with Revelation

This helpful book is absolutely excellent. Studying it with the Bible points out many important references to Old Testament worship and behavior, along with Jesus' actions or words in the gospels in the New Testament that meanings become understandable pictures. It is very readable, well researched, and is truly biblical in its direction. People who are students of scripture, love the Lord, and want to understand His word will be blessed.

This has got to be a must not just for Echo & the Bunnymen fans but also for any serious musican. Along side all the guitar tabs are printed the vocals so you to can sing like Ian McCulloch. ITS A MUST....

Sadly, I was an early Echo fan and thought that this would include their 80's songs. Instead turns out that I don't know any of the songs (since I sold my Evergreen CD after listening to it only once)

contemporary guardian-ward romance

Heroine has been in love with her guardian Hero since she was 15 & set out to make him notice her as a woman since she became his ward at 17. Unfortunately he didn't see her as a potential lover & even sent his various girlfriends-of-the-moment to vacation with her instead of taking him herself. The one time he did take her himself ended up with heroine declaring her love for him & proved to be embarrassing for both of them. Now at age 19 heroine is resigned that Hero would never see her as a lover. She wants to be independent from him now instead of waiting 2 more years before she has full legal control of her inheritance. But Hero doesn't think she's capable of protecting herself from fortune hunters so he proposes a marriage of convenience until she's 21. Heroine takes advantage of their temporary marriage & tries to make him love her. Her plan seems to work especially when Hero finally makes love to her. But the reappearance of Hero's old girlfriend instills doubt re: the permanence of their marriage.

Heroine may sound like a doormat but she wasn't. She just knew what she wanted & went for it. It showcased her inner strength (her stubbornness, resilience, & positive view of problems) to not be discouraged by Hero's lack of interest in her as a lover for the 2 years she lived with him as his ward & the 1st year of their marriage. She wasn't self-pitying. When she gave her best shot at something & it didn't work out, she moved on to her next plan.

I liked that we get both Hero & heroine's POVs. I could clearly see where their misunderstandings were & rooted for them to figure them out at some point. I liked that Hero chose to be celibate during the 2nd year as heroine's guardian b/c he was done with his casual-sex lifestyle. He didn't stray during their 1st year of their celibate marriage either. Once he realized he was in love with her, he tried his best to win her love. He was a sweetheart of an alpha Hero.

Just Ok!

So, I chose this book because it had a "marriage of convenience" storyline.

I must say that I found the book to be just ok.

I first felt sorry for the female character, because she had lost her parents at a young age and was stuck with a grandparent that was overly critical about any and everything she did, and just really didn't want her around, and therefore, requested that the make character take over the raising of the girl as a teenager. But then as the story went on (years passing) the female character really got on my nerves with all the unnecessary bad behavior, whining, and misunderstood communication with the male character.

With the male character I first applauded him for taking on the care of the female character, and again as time when on, I didn't quite understand how he could misunderstand some of her actions, as well as be bad with his communication, considering he was a successful business man.

As I said above this book was in my opinion just ok.

Thank God for Baseball

I expected a review of the phenomenon of baseball in American culture. What I didn't expect was good scholarship and fine theological reflection! Both are there. The essays are wonderful and examine the parallels between Christianity and baseball from the perspectives of history, ethics, and hope. Read it before your next trip to the ball park!

Complicated but compelling

I wound up picking and choosing chapters of this book because often got lost in the theological issues. The chapters on Jackie Robinson and Rickey, Christy and Pete, and Shoeless Joe were very interesting. My own father was a young mill league player in 1919 and even though I was a "girl" he loved to share with me the stories of the glory days of the game. This book brought much of him back.

While I have always been a strong supporter of Title IX, I'm not sold on the interest among women to play professional baseball. Likely the WMBA among other pro groups are more compelling interests for our gender. Not really my call, but the ladies really did not convince me of the need for a pro ladies league.

Admittedly I had to make myself stick with the "Old Man and the Sea" along with the other theology based chapters, I just could not wrap my brain around some of the reasoning. No matter, I'm of the opinion that we do need to attempt to understand stuff that appears incomprehensible and challenging.

Now, let's get busy and get Shoeless Joe in the Hall of Fame. The book made a great rational case for righting a wrong.

A good book that did not quite meet all my expectations.

I read this book as I continue to develop my own theology of baseball. I enjoyed reading this book but wish it would have gone a little deeper. The author's main theological issue involves creating an inclusive kingdom which he compares with Jackie Robinson breaking through the color barrier in baseball. For a deeper theological connection, I suggest John Sexton's Baseball as a Road to God.

A few years back, Canter, a journalist, dreamed up a great premise for his first novel: a Neanderthal alive in late-20th-century America. In it, a viable Neanderthal embryo is transplanted into a woman of the Quanoot tribe near Seattle. The child grows up as a golden-skinned girl, Ember, with powers of healing and empathy that convince some that she is Sisiutlqua, a powerful shaman. If the narrative were told entirely from Ember's viewpoint, her growing awareness of the physical and mental attributes that separate her from her peers might have generated a gripping tale. But Ember's voyage of self-knowledge begins with the discovery by paleoanthropologist Yute Nahadeh, in the Alaskan tundra, of the perfectly preserved Neanderthal woman who is Ember's original mother. Because Canter emphasizes the human rather than the scientific aspects of Ember's story, and for most of the tale keeps Ember from knowing she's Neanderthal, the narrative is disjointed. This leads to inconsistencies in Yute's character, which shifts from driven doctor to patient observer to crazed scientist. In essence, this story is a classic fairy tale in which an outcast child learns her true nature when she discovers that her real parents secreted her with commoners. YA. A well-written thriller set in the 1970s. The story begins as Dr. Yute Nahadeh discovers a well-preserved, frozen Neanderthal woman in Alaska. As he studies the woman, he discovers that she was pregnant at her death. He decides to implant the embryo and create a Neanderthal to study firsthand. He finds a hungry, homeless teenage couple to serve as the surrogate parents. After the birth of the child, the couple decide that they cannot give her up and raise the baby girl named Ember. Neither of the parents knows her history. As Ember grows, she begins to question her heritage because she looks and acts so differently from other girls her age. The folks in her hometown either shun her or worship her for her differences. Ember eventually seeks out Dr. Nahadeh and they travel to the area where the frozen corpse was found. Ember's search for her people, Dr. Nahadeh's fanatical study of the Neanderthal, a modern mining project, and greed bring this novel to a surprising end. Science and Mysticism compliment each other

As a scientist and a mystic, I eye both warily when I read novels. I found the anthropology believeable and the mysticism--though slightly unique--enhanced the humanity of this novel about a barely human protagonist. Liking and relating Amber is easy, and understanding her genetic make-up follows logic. Soon I forgot about the science though, and got lost in a story as sweet and gripping as any I have read. I typically read a book slowly, but this one prevented the lawn from getting mowed and the history papers from being graded as I read voraciously, engrossed in the people, the places, the anthropology, and the mystery.

An Excellent Book!

This book was a great book that let you experience the emotions that the character was going through. The book was an open book that could be taken from many different angles. The plot was interesting and kept you inside, it differed from other novels I have read in the past. The idea was so original and captivating it will leave you wanting for more.

A camper who picked up your book.

To Mr. Canter, this being your first novel, I have found it very good. I am a hard reader to please and this novel has kept me interested for the entire book. I have read the reviews after I read the book and tend to agree with some of them. This was too broad a subject to place between the pages of this novel. This subject could have been a trilogy. However, I totally disagree with the review of it being too much new age "voodoo". You have talent and promise. Write a sequel and give use hard pleasers something other to read than Ann Rice!

Fantastic Overview and Useful to All

The book by Dale, Von Schantz and Platt, From Genes to Genomes, is almost perfect. It is a 350 or so page exceptionally well written book describing all the introductory materials one would need to become current with genomes and genomics efforts. As with many of the other books I had around I first looked at this and at a glance set it aside. Then came the moment when I wanted to re-understand something and I opened this book up and I was hooked. It in a clean and clear manner takes the reader from basic DNA principles and through all of the key techniques used in genomic studies today. It avoids getting to complex into any one area and it reads in a straightforward and consistent manner. It is a superb asset for “catching up” and I suspect for first learning the materials.

Chapter 1 is the basic introduction to genes and genomes. It is DNA 101 but it contains little tidbits of essential materials that are all well integrated. One thus starts with a clear understanding where the authors are taking the reader.

Chapter 2 is the material on basic gene cloning. It uses the plasmid approach with bacteriophage and does so without burdening the reader with too much overhead and history. This Chapter discusses technique and technology and the reader is given a logical approach to the basics of cloning. Restriction enzymes are introduced and the material is adequate to have enough depth to see how they can be applied. There are, of course, a lot of implementation questions that are left hanging but that is typical of this study. There is a section on ligation and I would like to have seen this carried over a bit when discussing gene knock-outs. We can understand how the genes ligate but the question is how well does this carry-over the later processes.

Chapter 3 discusses DNA libraries. This is a wonderful summary of the concept. The graphics supplement the text without over powering it. One example of what I call the cook book facts is demonstrated in p 95 when discussing hybridization. Here is the curve showing how as temperature increases the DNA starts to break apart. This is the denaturing of DNA, a concept again used with the PCR analysis. This is less a theoretical or structure issue but one of those cook-book facts that have been added to the tool chest of the Genome builder.

Chapter 4 is the PCR process. Simply it is the separating of DNA, then tagging one end and the other end and going through a temperature sensitive denaturing and rebuilding until what is left is millions of copies of a desired DNA segment. My only complaint here is that the graphic, good, albeit it could be made a bit better with color.

Chapter 5 discusses sequencing and it gives a superb discussion of the Sanger approach. Namely ddNTPs are used with segments and then measured in a gel electrophoresis. I assume that the reader may have had some understanding of the physical details but overall it is clear and exceptionally useful.

The text continues developing other elements used in current day genomics. Chapter 9 is an attempt to provide an overview of microarrays, SNP, and even GWAS and phylogenetics. My problem here is that they are trying to stretch it a bit too far. These are reasonable summaries but to do microarrays justice it may take a bit more detail, and yes color, and the phylogenetics is much too much just a high level summary.

Finally the Glossary is fantastic and worth every page.

The strengths and weakness of the book are simple. On the strength side it covers all the key issues superbly. On the negative side, and this may be perhaps me, I find that almost like Organic Chemistry, in Gene manipulation there still are many cookbook rules that are scattered between the facts and logical constructs. If somehow there could be a clarification of the cook book rule and the well understood logical steps that would be a help.

Overall I would highly recommend this book for almost anyone, from beginner to professional. My focus is clinical and theoretical modelling and analysis, and I have avoided bench work as much as possible. But by reading this book I can see again how much work has been done over the past few decades.

Delivered on time, great product

This book is very readable and I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters I've read thus far for Molecular Genetics class. It does however assume you have a basic understanding of DNA biology so I would recommend brushing up a little on that before flipping through it. Still, it's great for anyone wanting to expand their knowledge in that area.
