Jessica McKellar is a software engineer from Cambridge, MA. She enjoys the Internet, networking, low-level systems engineering, and contributing to and helping other people contribute to open source software. She is a Twisted maintainer, organizer for the Boston Python user group, and a local STEM volunteer.

Abe Fettig is a software developer and maintainer of Hep, an open source message server that makes it possible to transparently route information between RSS, email, weblogs, and web services. He speaks frequently at software conferences including PyCon and lives in Portland, Maine with his wife, Hannah.

solid intro for novices

Summary

This book acts as a guide to building event driven network applications using the Twisted library. The book takes a breadth-first approach to covering this material, although the book is still too short to cover everything involved. There are many
helpful examples and exercises.

Disclaimer: I have little experience with network programming.

I thought the book achieved it's main goals nicely. Some of the complaints about the previous book - too short, a bit superficial, not as good as the online docs - are still accurate, but it's not intended to be a conceptual book. Still, some will be disappointed that there is not a deeper coverage of what's going on in there.

The examples get you off running quickly and in a short amount of time can take a novice into the territory of writing complex asynchronous code (safely!) with a solid understanding of what's going on, albeit not on the deepest levels.

Conclusions

I'm not technically reviewing the library itself, but I will say it was pretty fun and easy to use. Callbacks, especially, were something I've used before but in a less elegant way than here.

I give this a solid recommendation, but take care that you don't have expectations for something that's just not there. If you already did all the web tutorials, you're probably wasting time reading the book. Twisted Network Programming Essentials

Not a bad little book

Not a bad little book, but not an improvement over what you would find online, necessarily. It's definitely a short one. If you feel like getting a book, it definitely doesn't have much going against it (it just doesn't have tons going for it). This isn't the magic sauce to grok twisted's gnarlier parts.

Intro & title story will fascinate esoteric history buffs.

I only read one story, Deadline, because of it's historical significance. It is more of a spy story than science fiction, but well-written in a style that blends the action, exposition, & dialog fluidly, with suspense, making it easy to read straight through quickly, except for the technical part, which you could skim through unless you're interested in it's scientific accuracy. I was interested -- I read the story because of the "urban myth" about the FBI investigating the story and meeting Astounding editor John W. Campbell, which turns out to be completely true, and is elaborated in the introduction to this book.

I highly recommend Deadline & Other Controversial SF Classics to anyone interested in the history of science fiction or interested in more esoteric history of World War II or cold war espionage, as much for the introduction as the story. The other stories are apparently irrelevant to that end, but may be a bonus for SF fans.

The only reason for 1 less than 5 stars: The kindle was published sloppily, with some big spelling & punctuation errors, and no active table of contents to skip to the primary story. But that story and intro are worth 4 stars.

Powerful and very well written!

This book is wonderfully written. As a reader, I truly felt like I was there with Dr. Brand. This is a story that really makes one think about the fact that we, as human beings, all feel pain. We almost always see that pain as only a burden none of us wish to carry. However, Dr. Brand's story is about the hardship experienced by lepers in the mid 20th century which was exacerbated due to the absence of pain in their lives. Long after the individual had taken the medication that would arrest the virus of leprosy, they were still left with the inability to feel pain due to the damage wrought by the disease. This absence of pain is what caused all the serious infections and loss of limbs, etc. Incredible what he did to help these people.

Cerebral Analysis of Pain

I bought this book after reading Philip Yancy's book Soul Survivor. Dr. Philip Brand was a mentor described in one of the chapters. This book is a biographical account of Dr. Brand's life. It provides compelling insight into the physiology of pain and why it is indeed a gift we should be grateful for. It definitely changed my thinking.

Mr. Yancey and Dr. Brand are the authors. I expected more in the way of 'Christian' testimony, especially from Philip Yancey, to be stated throughout but I am not disappointed. Actions have always spoken much louder than words and Dr. Brand lived out beautiful grace. mercy and love throughout his career.

Anyone experiencing physiological or emotional pain would benefit from this book.

Thought-provoking book!

This is a very interesting book, not your typical book about pain. It starts off by the author talking about leprosy patients that had all kinds of issues (chewing their fingers, breaking bones, losing limbs) all because they had no sense of pain. Pain or discomfort wasn't even a thought in their minds because they had no warning system in their body. All they could feel was pressure and tingling with intense pain, and they became fascinated with the effect it had on their body, partly because other people would have extreme responses. Not to sound gory or anything, but this book does give real details about real people that struggled with a life without pain and the destruction it led to in their body. In modern society, most people think that it would be great to never experience pain and to never have to take drugs again to deal with the pain. The reality is, pain is a GOOD thing! Pain is the body's built in warning system that something is going wrong and needs to be fixed. Far too often we seek to relieve pain by living in comfort, pampering ourselves or drugging our systems to feel "normal again", yet completely ignoring the true source of the problem. This book will definitely give you a new perspective on pain and how thankful you should be for it! Pain truly is a GIFT!

Once again, Sue Lyndon returns with a wonderful novel. Lia is kidnapped from a human ship, and Admiral Cavvik decides he must keep her for himself. The two of them grow to care for each other, but not all is so wonderful when they reach his home planet. Someone is upset Cavvik has taken a human for a wife and exacts their revenge. Highly recommended, a short, but sweet, and utterly sexy novel. Especially if you like reading about spankings and steamy sex...

The book goes into many details including the intangibles of valuing a business.

....unnecessarily and excruciatingly verbose!

Although his work on valuation techniques is straightforward in later chapters, the 1st several chapters do not do an adequate job of explaining the psychology of business valuation, buying or selling or the 'intangible' of business value. Words such as 'steeds' and 'pestilence' belong in literature, not reference manuals. Are Cliff Notes available to decipher just what these chapters are trying to communicate? I am trying to buy a business;lots of hard work lay ahead. Why must this book start off so unclear?

Professional approach with simple expaniations, easy to use

In preparation to sell my business for appx $10MM I sought many references on how to make a professional presentation and and use methodology that would be reasonable and logical to lead to a sale. Wilbur has doen a great job with this and his other book, How To Sell A business. I recommend that anyone read there two before putting a package together. I have had many favorable comments from both principals and brokers concerning the structure of the presentation I was able do make using Wilbur's help.
