About the Author

Over the last 30 years, I've been engaged in trying to raise awareness on the issue of climate change. I never imagined decades later, I would be fighting the same battle.

After years of talk and political paralysis, we have reached a tipping point, climate change is no longer a problem of the future, we are experiencing the results of a warming planet all around us, rising seas, widening deserts and deadly wildfires. We are losing control of our future. Our civilization is threatened today by changes that have been taking place over decades.

Climate change affects everyone, in every country. Climate change is in everybody's backyard. Only by acting now and standing together can we tip the scales and achieve the results necessary to make the planet a healthy and safe place to live--for now and for the future. At one time energy conversation was only about oil, coal and gas. Now people are talking about renewable energy--how it can result in cheaper and plentiful energy, and the positive role this can play on the environment.

Climate change presents us with a huge challenge, how to move a society that has been dependent on fossil fuels to a future that is cleaner and more sustainable.

While it is easy to become discouraged there is reason for optimism. There is a groundswell occurring and it's rising from the ground up. Leadership is coming from people themselves. We have the opportunity to re-think how we live in this world now and for future generations.

I have great faith in the power of innovation and the ingenuity of people from all walks of life to solve this problem. Technological advances are well under way--renewable energy, increased efficiency and innovation in building practices are gaining momentum.

One way to reduce the need and desire for fossil fuel is to design houses that require less fuel to build, operate, and to heat and cool. When houses are thoughtfully built this way, the energy requirement is vastly reduced. Renewable energy that uses solar thermal panels, photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and geothermal systems--combined with good design--creates houses that require no fossil fuel.

We know that 38 to 40 percent of the energy in this country is used to heat and cool our buildings-residential and commercial. This old way is expensive, dirty, and a proven danger to life. Yet it's a problem with a solution. But we must decide to apply that solution now.

This book advocates for smaller houses, which is a strong trend in this country. Smaller houses reduce wasted space that most people don't need or use. Smaller, better-built houses teach us to curb our appetite for energy, and lessen our need to build, heat, cool, and maintain that extra space we don't need or even want. Building smaller, along with building houses prefabricated--in the process using less time, fewer materials, and using both more efficiently--is the sanest and wisest recipe for home construction, for now and for the future.

Again, Sheri Koones hits another home run for anyone interested in great design, techniques and resources with pre-fab houses! Not only am I finding great inspirations for my own designs, but especially handy is the Source Guide in the back of the book. I'm using it to death already. I would recommend this book to anyone that is planning to design and build a custom home. Pre-fab is the way to go (saves cost and time, increases quality!), and Sheri Koones' book is one of the best references I've seen!

It's OK, but not great

I was looking forward to this book as it covers two subjects that are of great interest to me, prefab and reasonably-sized dwellings.

I have to say that I found it slightly lacking in substance. I've been following the industry for quite awhile and found a few technical errors in the text and upon reading it cover to cover, I was left underwhelmed.

Visually, it's a nicely presented book, but it's definitely more of a coffee table book than one of substance except to an absolute novice. Perhaps that is the target audience and if so, then the book delivered well.

I feel a bit bad about only giving it 3 stars as I think that for an absolute novice, it is a nice book; I just wish that there was more substance to it for those of us who are interested in more technical details.

I've seen most of these houses before

Before buying this book, be forewarned!!! If you are like me and buy Fine Homebuilding magazine off the rack whenever they have an issue devoted to small houses, you will have already read many of the chapters in this book. I was a bit disappointed to find so much repetition. I feel it would have been more honest to highlight fact that this is a compilation of previously published articles with seemingly minimal new material. A nice reference if you don't regularly read and save the magazine, but not worth it if you do.

The best yet!

GMs have long used "canned" campaign settings in their various game worlds - ofttimes to save effort, or just because they find little interest in the actual creation of the world itself, and would rather spend their time crafting exciting adventures for their players to enjoy. Whatever the case, the pre-published campaign world has long been a staple of the tabletop RPG. When I played AD&D, it was Greyhawk. When we changed over to 3.5, it was the Forgotten Realms. Now that I have started using the excellent Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, it is Golarion, and the Inner Sea Campaign Setting.

This is truly an exciting product. The book expands upon the first version of the setting, and advances the campaign timeline by three years or so. Events introduced in the various Pathfinder Adventure Paths are covered briefly, and each and every nation of the Inner Sea region is given an exhaustive update, including histories, important personages, and cultural items of interest. One nice touch is that few important NPCs are detailed via game stats, allowing a GM to customize his world as he or she sees fit. Also included are new monsters, prestige classes, magic items and more. The production values are top-notch, with beautiful art and excellent maps of the world itself.

My only complaint is one that seems to hound most modern RPG products. The actual book seems a bit flimsy, and will not hold up under extended use. The 1st Edition D&D books I bought back in 1981 are still in pristine condition, and saw heavy use back in the day. For $50 I was hoping for more quality in that regard, but there you go. Highly recommended.

A Fantastic overview of the Pathfinder World with 270 Pages of information, maps, full-color illustrations, and commentary.

This is a real "keeper" of a book! It is lavishly printed and Hard-bound, and well above the usual standards of "play guides". This is a superiority crafted guide that is a pleasure to read; a compendium of illustrations and cartography, and absolutely worth having in your gaming library.

The Inner Sea World Guide is a detailed overview of the Pathfinder world setting, and it covers the Cultures, and Geography, as well as history and folklore of the regions surrounding the Inner Sea, as well as some specifics that can be incorporated into RPG play. Consider it the "Lonely Planet" Guide to central Golarion (the imaginary world that is the setting for the Pathfinder RPG and ACG). There are no spoilers, because the book does not address story threads, as much as the over-arching cultural fabric.

Chapter one is the Inner Sea Races (actually 12 human ethnicities, and six non-human races), Chapter Two comprises most of the book and is the description of The Inner Sea Region, including a historical timeline, and a region by region description, aspects of the social situation in each land, and the points of interest. Chapter Two is 180 of the 318 total pages, and the real content of this book. If you read it cover to cover, you can practically put your finger on the included wall map and describe something about the area.

The section on Religion is 30 pages long, and covers deities, philosophies and planes of existence. Faith and Religion in RPGs are very interesting because deities are so uniquely palpable! In an RPG, if you beat up too many of Baphomet's disciples, you're probably going to end up in a face to (goat) face meeting, and this potential is not overlooked.

The "Life" section covers the calendar and annual customs, weather, language and trade. And, then the book starts to really re-engage it's RPG roots with some tables in the Factions, and Adventuring sections, including an introduction to classes, spells, equipment, items and monsters, but these sections are very very brief when measured against the four volumes of the Bestiary, and the libraries of books covering the other aspects of RPG play currently out there for Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder Campaign Setting Books are usually more focused on a specific campaign, and The Inner Sea World Guide is unique because so many Pathfinder campaigns takes place within the umbrella of the Inner Sea region. As a Pathfinder world primer, this book is tremendously informative.

This is NOT a player Handbook or a GM Handbook. This book is an encyclopedia of information about the nature of the central region of Golarion. This book is probably most useful for a GM who may have GM'd other RPGs, and can easily and rapidly digest the game mechanic for Pathfinder, but needs to augment his or her ability to add depth and perspective to scenarios, or doesn't follow the published Campaigns, but wants to author their own, and maintain a global continuity. As a player, it is tremendously informative, and The Inner Sea World Guide can give a richness to the setting of the game, a must-read for committed role players, and a good familiarity for the setting - even if you are just playing Pathfinder ACG.

The Goods

This is more or less all you really need to play in the world of Golarion in the Pathfinder setting when it comes to general background.
Unlike some books that only cover enough to get you to buy another book, this one has real meat to it.
It covers all the major areas, in detailed summary fashion, of Golarion.
It covers the same with the various gods and even quite a few other fringe divines that might be encountered.
It covers the main races of the game world and organizations you might encounter and even some new feats, critters to deal with and some interesting unique items.
We've played two major Paths in Pathfinder (that's a fair amount of levels) and I'm still finding this book useful.

Unleash the Power of Compelling Stories

Lately, I have been reading about the power of persuasion, and some experts believe stories can be used to induce a trance-like state. I like telling stories, and have found that as a teacher, students remember the personal stories I tell long after they have forgotten basic facts. However, I don't think I am always a great storyteller, and I have rarely tried to craft a good story. I hoped this book would shed light on the power of a story, and show me how to tell an effective one.

Guber highlights the times he failed to connect with a client, and most of the time, it was because he failed to tell a story. This may sound counter-intuitive to many in the business world. After all, isn't business about being sober and logical? Where do stories fit in? According to Guber, most people in business forget that they are dealing with humans, and in order to reach people, a sales pitch has to have an emotional component. Stories not only add an emotional dimension to business interactions, but also appeal to our natural love of good stories (which contain a challenge, struggle, and resolution). This love of the challenge-struggle-resolution story is, according to research in the book, hard-wired into our brains. Thus, stories are not just entertaining: they are powerful tools that help us connect with others, and persuade them to see our point of view.

I have to respectfully disagree with other reviewers that suggest the author doesn't explain how to tell good stories. It is true that this is not a book you would use in a creative writing class. You won't learn about the elements of a short story, or what personification is. However, the book explains how to use a certain type of story to become more successful. Guber does clearly explain how to tell an effective story. The entire book is about this, surrounded by stories of him and others. He tells readers how to find the right hero, where to find inspiration, ways to make a story emotionally relevant, how to make sure a story connects with a given audience, how to be authentic, the importance of proper intention (thus sending out proper body language), using props, and many other tips and tricks that clearly indicate how a good, purposeful, story is told. Many of these tips are condensed in the "aHHa" sections at the end of each chapter. He may not treat the topic the way an English teacher would, but he does offer practical advice.

One possible drawback is that this book may not appeal to all readers because it is short on hard data, which isn't too surprising, given that it is about shifting away from that sort of approach. Guber does include research, it is just that the book itself is based on Guber's personal ideas and stories. I am convinced, but it is definitely a new way of looking at business interaction.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It opened my eyes to the power of the stories I regularly tell, and ones I have been told. After reading this book, I know how to craft a compelling story, that will entertain, build rapport with others, persuade others, and help me accomplish my goals. Since reading the book, I have made an effort to tell more stories, and the response has been positive. The fodder for stories is all around, in what I have done, and what I have seen others do. As I start my own business, and continue to teach in the classroom, I plan to craft my storytelling ability to not only educate, but also make more money.

Would have made a good magazine article, but the premise is just too simple for a full-blown book.

Stories have power. They can be used to motivate, pursuade, entertain, educate, train, coach, communicate, etc. And the instant book being reviewed reminds the reader that stories often play a significant role in the rise of a person not yet successful who ultimately becomes successful.

How do you hear about someone if you don't hear their story or a story that they tell you? You're correct - you don't. And if you don't hear about someone, then how likely is it that they are going to become successful? You're right - it's unlikely. The author in this book has strung together a bunch of stories, dropped a lot of names of famous people, and told us that telling stories is where it is at. I thought many of the stories were pretty good, but few were all that compelling.

I found the book to be an easy and quick read. There really wasn't anything earth-shattering between its covers. The message was quite simple, and you'd get it just by reading the title on the cover. So I don't really recommend someone waste their money on this tome.

I have read or skimmed a number of other books on storytelling. I think the following books are pretty good reads and probably would prove to be a better way to spend your money if you would buy one of them instead "Tell to Win." 3 stars!

An Essential Skill For Success

"Everybody in business shares one universal problem: To succeed you have to persuade others to support your vision, dream or cause. ... you have to deliver a clarion call that will get your listeners' attention, emotionalize your goals as theirs, and move them to act in your favor. You have to reach their hearts as well as their minds - and this is just what story telling does."

I would go one step further and say that the above statement applies to all of life, not just business. We are all constantly trying to sell our ideas and points of view. We are constantly trying to convince others to see things our way - no matter if it is to buy our products/services, become our friends, join our club/organization or cause. Yet most of the time we rely on logical reasons to try and convince others.

Humans make decisions based on emotions and then use logic to justify those decisions. So if we are going to be successful we need a way to engage others emotionally. And from the earliest of history, the most successful way to engage others emotionally is with stories.

So Tell to Win is the story of the importance of stories in whatever we do. Stories have the ability to touch our hearts - to make the connection between our minds and our hearts. Stories are much easier to remember than a set of data or historical facts. Therefore we can retain, remember and retell the stories.

Peter Guber has spent his life in the entertainment industry and draws on his wealth of experience to make Tell to Win come to life. The book is filled with interesting stories about how his success was totally dependent on telling the right story. He also shares some failures which were primarily because he failed to craft a good story.

While the book is not a how to manual, there are plenty of lessons scattered throughout the book on the essential elements necessary for crafting and telling a story. Storytelling cannot be reduced to a formula. An effective story is a living, evolving thing. It will and should change with the audience.

One of the real benefits of an effective story is the audience adopts the story and retells/shares the experience.

Storytelling is an art and you will only become successful with practice. We all grew up using/telling stories. Somewhere along the way most of us abandoned stories for facts. We may never achieve the level of proficiency required for the entertainment business, but by studying the tips, techniques and stories in this book, we can become much better at telling our own stories. Crafting our own stories and paying attention to the feedback, we will become better.

The better we become at telling stories, the more successful we will become. This is an important skill to master and there are lots of lessons in this book.

Required reading for all recent graduates.

This is an excellent book. Recent discussion in the electronics industry indicate a profound lack of soldering skill amongst newly graduated engineers. This book should be given as a graduation present to all of them!

It is clearly and succinctly written and well illustrated. It covers almost everything a hobbyist or an engineer will encounter whilst prototyping, including joining wires, flying electronic components and heatsinking. Every time I thought of some trick that I know and would not be in the book, there it was in the next paragraph. The only reservation that I have is that the book does not deal with hand soldering surface mount components. It would be nice if the book could be revised to address that. But if someone learns from this book, the leap to hand soldered SMD (at least the SOIC types) is not difficult. As for BGAs and the like, no soldering iron is going to help that.

The book has a decided English flavour with a little European bias- I am not sure where you would get some of the flux products in North America. Also a "dry joint" or "cold joint" is called a "cold-solder" joint over here, but from experience my use of the English term is mostly implicitly understood. Also the term "side-cutters" is largely unknown, but generically called "cutters". Again, most readers will get over the common language barrier. However I still can't swallow the "L" in solder (which Mr Winstanley did point out).

Highly Recommended!

I remember first seeing Alan's "Basic Soldering Guide" in the late 1990s when the Internet was still relatively new. At that time, I thought "I wish this had been available when I was starting out."

This guide was, and still is, an indispensable resource for anyone who wishes to learn how to solder. It walks the reader through all of the steps, from choosing a soldering iron to working with different fluxes to the actual act of soldering. Of particular interest to me is the fact that Alan doesn't just cover soldering components to boards -- he also explains things that a lot of other guides miss out, like attaching wires to potentiometers (a lot of the techniques that we experienced "solderers" take for granted are non-obvious to beginners, but Alan doesn't assume any prior knowledge). This latest version boasts 80 all-new color photographs accompanied by detailed explanations and a wealth of useful hints, tricks, and tips.

Business textbook takes readers to a different dimension

DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS review by John Haynes
Not many of us can lay claim to being true paradigm-shifters, but let's give David Banner and T. Elaine Gagne credit---in their book DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS, they've managed to take the college business textbook to another level. Banner and Gagne do this by incorporating a fairly healthy dose of spirituality in their approach, and the result is a very readable textbook for undergraduate or MBA-level course work.
Basically, DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS examines organizational structure and processes in the ordinary way but also (and here's where the paradigm shifts) in a subjective, ethical, and-one is tempted to repeat---spiritual way.
What resonates throughout the book is the premise that organizations---like the people who comprise them---cannot be easily or readily quantified. Behavior cannot be predicted with 100% accuracy, and expecting human beings to work and think like machines is completely unrealistic. One has to cut beneath the surface to see the hidden dynamics. What one sees then is that the organization is nothing more than an agreement in consciousness, i.e. an agreement about `who we are', `how we interact with each other', how we deal with authority', etc. Understanding this basic truth ( and its far-ranging implications) results in a smoother operation, a better organizational flow.
For instance, in their book Banner and Gagne profile the organizational styles of unconventional companies like Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc. and Celestial Seasonings, but also examine such "staid players" as Dow Corning, Inc. and IBM. Thrown in the mix you'll find relevant mentions of the human potential movement, entropy, and quantum physics. Believe it or not, the lessons learned from such "out there" disciplines can be of great benefit to business organizations, if only reluctant corporations would open themselves to the possibilities.
From the book: "Science and spirituality are blending as the paradigm shifts; so are spirituality and organization. The Latin definition of spiritus, the root of spirit, is `breath.' In the organizational context, spirituality breathes life into the organization. Harrison Owen, in his article `Leadership by Indirection,' argues that, if we were to get `back to basics,' we would see our organizations as `spirit and flow' and that leadership would be seen as the capacity to `focus spirit and enhance its power.'"
This is not your father's MBA handbook, boys and girls.
DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS is also filled with Ashleigh Brilliant's delightful POT-SHOTS cartoons, which by themselves would be worth the price of the book.

Visit the world where Arnie is god

Muscle is one of my all-time favourite books - it is very interesting and very funny.

The book tells the story of how Sam Fussell builds himself a muscle suit of armour to protect him from the things that frighten him.

The story begins in New York where Sam is a frightened young man working in publishing who develops an interest in bodybuilding. Interest rapidly turns to obsession as he starts to exercise more and more and pumps himself full of protein. Eventually the obsession becomes all consuming and he packs up and moves to California. In California he hooks up with more serious bodybuilders and the obsession grows. He follows an insane training program, supplemented by large-scale steroid use (abuse) in an attempt to compete as a bodybuilder and a power-lifter. Preparation for competition is even more demanding (It's not about feeling good; it's about looking good) as he attempts to shed all his body fat.

The author writes with a wry yet sympathetic detachment from his obsession. The result is a portrait of obsession that is simultaneously amusing (often outright funny) and chilling (for example taking horse steroids - 'they give these to million dollar horses; they must be OK').

A wonderful book - accessible to all but essential reading for anybody who has ever had even a small obsession with weights.
