This is a paperback version of my book, Refinery Process Modeling, that was originally published in March 2000. The contents are identical to my original book, and the lesser weight makes shipping of the book outside the USA more economical. The subject matter is steady state simulation of oil refineries using commercially available software. The techniques are computer independent and may be applied to any simulator program with the capability of modeling petroleum streams. Subjects covered include petroleum lab tests, representation of refinery feed streams by using typical tests, thermodynamics, modeling distillation columns, refinery reaction processes, and modeling of various refinery flowsheet processes. Refinery processes discussed are: crude and vacuum distillation, FCC processes, catalytic reforming, delayed coking, hydrogen generation, hydrotreating, hydrocracking, sulfuric acid alkylation, HF alkylation, catalytic polymerization, visbreaking, ether processes, and amine treating processes. For each process there is an overview which also includes typical operating conditions. PFD's are included for the processes, as well as powerpoint drawings to illustrate the various modeling techniques. Numerous examples of sample calculations are also used to illustrate the techniques. Also included in the book is a glossary of petroleum terms and a comprehensive index. Since its introduction in March 2000 this book has been widely circulated and used as a training aid throughout the world. Copies have been sold in more than 40 countries outside the USA.

About the Author
Gerald L. Kaes is an independent consultant with more than 40 years of experience in modeling petroleum processes. He has personally traveled around the world to present many training seminars. Mr. Kaes began his career with CONOCO as a member of the refinery simulation/optimization team. He has also worked for engineering companies and written process simulation software. Before becoming an independent consultant he spent 14 years with Simulation Sciences where he functioned as the refinery process technical support expert. He also was active in program development, program documentation, and user training for Simulation Sciences. As an independent consultant he has developed simulation models for many petroleum refineries.

it is a very good text book for designers of petroleum refinery industry, from the very beginning of how to simulate a refinery unit, the author teach the reader step by step to simulate and compute almost all kinds of refinery operations.

Exceptional reference book

The set of Kaes's two books are exceptional references for process engineering aspects of petroleum refining technologies. The books cover the steps that are usually missing between a description of what the process does (in a qualitative sense) and how to actually perform quantitative mass & energy balances.

I have started to make use of the material in a senior-level chemical engineering course that I teach & highly recommend it to the students.

About the Author
John Roberts is widely recognized for his contributions to warship literature. He was editor of Warship for six years and is the coauthor of the standard works on British battleships and cruisers of the Second World War period. His superb warship plans led one authority to describe him as “the best draughtsman in the UK.” His two previous volumes for Conway, on the Dreadnought and Intrepid, were widely acclaimed.

Dreadnought Anatomy first class

HMS Dreadnought was a revolutionary new type of battleship and set the definition for all following battleships in the 20th century. This book sets the standard as THE reference for the ship and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in battleships in general, right through to the serious builder who wants to scratch-build a museum-standard model.

The book is divided into several key sections - photographs, drawings, technical details. The photos and drawings are excellent and the drawings show not just the broad-picture items but even small fittings such as portholes, loading hatches, and the various types of water-tight doors in use at the time, as well as where the coal chutes were located on the upper decks - all things that many plans fail to show. All drawings are to scale so can be easily enlarged for modeling purposes.

The ship is shown at several stages in her career, not just "as completed", and all major modifications are listed in date order so an experienced modeler should be able to follow the drawings and build the ship at any stage.

Even a non-modeler will enjoy this book. It is not especially cheap but then, quality never is. I wish I'd bought it years ago.

This series is one of the best . Each book covers one ship in great detail. This one covers the vessel that started it all HMS Dreadnought. Sadly, if USS South Carolina or her sister had been faster out of the building yards, we might not call 20th century ships of the line Dreadnoughts. This book covers every detail there is about this amazing ship. I recommend this series as one of the best detail books out there.

A must have for any battleship fan

I purchased this book for two reasons. First, I make models of ships. This book is an invaluable reference manual. The detail will actually go into the internal layout of the ship. Crew cabins and sleeping area will show up on the details. The very excellent plans of the ship are worth $30 to $40 dollars at any shop that sells ship plans. That is worth the price of the book.

Conversely, I was a little surprised at the write up of the operation of the ship. Dreadnought had no economical cruise speed. So, unlike other ships of her time period, like the USS Michigan, she was never economical to operate. Dreadnough had no design flaws. Thus, she was the working prototype for all British Great War ships. In design she was perfect.

I was very happy with the pictures of the ship. I had never seen most of the pictures before. The level of detail in these pictures gives a good picture of the set up of the ship.

This book is not a operational history. That is somewhat a regret. However, people wanting an operational history of the ship should read Robert Massey's excellent "Castles of Steel".

This book is total truth in advertising, it is a study of the ship. It is a total look at the Dreadnought. The book is vital for model builders and is a great reference for any student of history.

The Fat Cat: a repetitive but funny picture book for young readers.

"There once was an old lady who was making some gruel. She had buisness with a neighbor lady, and asked her cat to watch it while she was gone....."
Thus begins a story of a VERY hungry little kitty cat, who not only eats the gruel....but the pot, and the old lady, and more and more! The cat gets fatter and fatter as he goes around eating everybody he meets to the point he resembles a furry hot-air ballon with shorts and a blue jacket. The story is(admittedly)a bit trite and repetitive , but very, VERY funny. I remember owning this as it kid, so I had to get it again. I don't want to spoil the ending, but let's just say the cat gets far worse than just a simple case of indegestion. Maybe a tad on the morbid side, but why complain? It's nothing you couldn't show your little 2 or 3 year old.

The Fat Cat a Danish Foldtale

My daughter loved this as a child and we literally wore the soft-covered book to a raggedly condition (although we still have it). Got this for my 4-year old granddaughter with the expectation that she will get a similar enjoyment from it. The book arrived ahead of schedule from the Grumpy Gargoyle. This was a new, not a used copy. Very happy with this order.

The Fat Cat is Back: Found my long lost favorite childhood book

I love this book. Had it as a child, some 40 years ago, and thought I'd find it some day. Well, I never did until I looked on Amazon.com. Actually, I found it on Amazon 4-5 years ago, but it was very expensive (like $30.00 or more, if I recall correctly). So, periodically I checked for lower prices and eventually it came down. The book is out of print, so it is rare. The seller got it to me very quickly, and even with a nice personal thank you note. The book was in great shape, and actually looked exactly and precisely like the one from my childhood. It was just what I wanted.

And the story is great. I have always wanted to read it to my boys, which I did the day it arrived. Now, both of them are beyond the age of having Dad read to them, but they loved it. The story is a hoot. Slightly silly, slightly creepy, and lots of fun. Thanks Amazon.

The Vietnam War was and still is, next to the Civil War, one of the most divisive wars in U.S. history. By looking at the key decision makers on both sides, Langguth chronicles why the outcome was inevitable. In the U.S., there was an outgoing beloved president who warned against a "military-industrial" complex that could influence foreign policy through costly investments in winless conflicts. It was a warning that went unheeded. Into office came a young president elected by the narrowest of margins who found himself deferring to the "wisdom" of elder statesmen, many of whom still retained the view of the U.S. as an invincible power. Finally, there was an old-line former Senate leader swept into the Oval Office because of an assassination's bullet. On the other side, there was Ho Chi Minh, the quiet revolutionary, and Diem, a corrupt leader backed by the U.S., who handled his opposition by silencing them with such weapons as a resurrected guillotine. This book may be compared somewhat to David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest, but it is unique in its perspective of the major players on both sides and is reinforced by newly released documents and the interviews Langguth undertook to sort through detail by detail where everything went so wrong in our war, our Vietnam. Nothing new; bloated and trivial

A quick litmus test for the accuracy and even-handedness of Vietnam War books is to compare the author's treatment of the massacre of 3,000-5,000 innocent Vietnamese civilians (teachers, religious figures, etc.) by the NVA and VC in Hue during the Tet Offensive with the treatment of the My Lai massacre where several hundred innocents were killed. One was a deliberate official act (the NVA and VC were given lists of names and addresses to target prepared by their intelligence people) and the other an aberration (every two-bit Seymour Hersh wanna be has been looking for other US Army massacres since 1969 and finding only dry wells) which was investigated and punished. Langguth fails this test miserably, misinterpreting both events. His fly-on-the-wall attempts to reconstruct insider politics doesn't come across credibly either. It is particularly shameful that he abruptly ends his book in May 1975 ingnoring the Cambodian holocaust, the Vietnamese boat people and other tragic consequences of his reporting. (I spent a year in Vietnam as an Army officer in 1968-69 and four years doing aid work in Cambodia in 1996-2000 so I have seen it firsthand). This book is just more tired, establishment press late hits and piling on...save the trees and buy "Stolen Valor" instead.

Detailed narration of war

This book is a must-read for anyone wanting an in-depth history/ chronology of the Vietnam war. It's primarily a political history, documenting the motivations and actions of leaders and those who advised them, and then how those decisions played out on the ground.
One early event from the book is telling: in May 1962, McNamara was making his first trip to Vietnam for a detailed briefing on the situation, particularly on Communist strength. There were, in fact, an estimated 40,000 in local Communist battalions and identifiable guerrilla units. His briefers tightened their criteria, and reduced that to 20,000 - 25,000. THAT number had to be reduced, and was cut to 17,500. By the time McNamara arrived in Vietnam, he was told the number was 16,305. The night before the briefing, the colonel doing the briefing removed one-third of "enemy-controlled areas" from McNamara's briefing map.
This book details not only how our government deceived the public, but also itself -- and goes into the motivations of the South Vietnamese, North Vietnamese, and their relations with China, Soviet Union, and the French.

I do not see "lack of analysis" as a fault of this book, as a previous reviewer did. The book does a great job of presenting what each actor said, wrote, and did -- in plenty of detail so that the reader can think for him/herself. For instance, Langguth spells out exactly how Jack Kennedy SAID privately that he was planning on pulling out of Vietnam in his second term. Would that have happened? Would it have been prevented by Congress, and the need for conservatives' support on domestic issues? Did Kennedy really mean what he said? That's all interesting, but it's essentially speculation outside the scope of the book.
I do think the book would have benefited from somehow presenting an overview of the war along with the detailed "novel" approach, which trusts the reader with independent knowledge of the war. Also, the binding in my library copy was weak.

Power and failure

This work shows exactly how the United states gradually became involved in Vietnam from the details on up. Other reviews have commented on Langguth's objectivity and accuracy. I will mention the most lasting impression this book left on me:
Most of us have the perception that the great men of power throughout history are made of something different from ourselves. We only see them on the world's stage, made up and prepared; speeches rehearsed; ceremony and station lending gravity to their every word and action. We don't think of them sleepless; with a bit of popcorn stuck in their teeth; complaining to their wives; or any of the other everyday situations that even these men of power experience. And so we assume their minds are always bent to grand designs. We think they hold a certain wisdom that lets them maneuver through politics and war, making decisions based on facts or morality.
Langguth's tale tells a different story. Decisions that cost tens of thousands of lives and reshape the world are made by men as sweaty and itchy as you and I. Wars are started because of ego, petty squabbles, and job security. Elections! How many have died so that one man could keep his job? So we see Kennedy and Johnson and Nixon, and all the well-dressed men around them, chewing their lips and eyeing one and other with mistrust, stabbing one and other in the back, lying and cheating, making mistakes.
Wars are started all because we make the mistake of investing such power in mere humans.

Isidoro Gilbert is a connoisseur about Argentina's relations with former USSR

Here in Brazil, I read this good book about former Soviet Union and Argentina’s relations. Please. This review is in English, but this book is in Spanish.
This book has these main great qualities:
1-The author of this good book, Isidoro Gilbert is an old man, but he really knows the subject of this good book. From 1960 decade and 1990 decade, Isidoro Gilbert knows the facts first hand.
2-Isidoro Gilbert is 100% unbiased about Soviet Union and Argentina’s relations. For instance; Isidoro Gilbert writes about the huge collection of more than 50 occidental expensive cars owned by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev (1906 - 1982), in 1970 decade. He also talks about corruption, incompetence, etc. among Argentina’s leaders. Even so, he never really left the subject of this good book.
3-The chapter 10 is about the Soviet Union's money sent to Argentine left. At the prologue, Isidoro Gilbert writes that the vast majority of Soviet money sent to Argentina went to rich cereals’ companies of Argentina, not to the Argentina’s left.
4-From the chapter three onwards, this book follows chronological order.
5-Argentina’s leaders and Soviet leaders ever knew more about the other country, than about the country that they were ruling.
6-There’s some appendixes in this book, with usefull informations.
7-The rule of former USSR in the Falklands War, in 1982 has an entire (17) chapter only dedicated to it.
8-The chapter 18 is dedicated to the relationship between Alfonsin and Gorbachev and shows USSR as nations under the leadership of incompetents leaders.
9-Even not about China and Argentina’s relations, this book talks something about this subject. China ever had a pragmatig aprouch about Argentina.
10-About the Argentina’s Communist Party(PCA), this book shows the PCA as it really was: a weak and powerless organization, but not an imbecile organization. As na example the PCA's congress in 1990 booed Soviet delegates, but supported Fidel Castro's delegates.
11- This book is the book that you must read about the relationship between former Soviet Union and Argentina, between 1960 decade and the end of Soviet Union, in 1991. Isidoro Gilber saw the facts and talked not only with many persons of the Argentina's left, but also with many Argentine militaries, such as "admiral" Emilio Massera (1925 – 2010 and general and president Roberto Eduardo Viola ( 1924 – 1994).
There’s some reazons that I have to give four stars for this book:
1-Only at the chapter three onwards, this book follows chronological order. The chapter one and two deserved to divided in the chpaters three and all the others chapters.
2-About the Winston Churchill Iron Curtain's speech, in 1946, this book claims that such speech was talked at the University of Fulton( chapter four). Such speech was at the Westminster College at Fulton, Missouri. See wikipedia.
3-This same chapter four of this book also claims that at the Vatican, Franz Von Papen (1879- 1969) was ploting a separated peace between the United States and Nazi Germany; something that I don’t agree. In fact, wikipedia writes that Franz Von Papen was ambassador of Nazi Germany in Turkey and never went to the Vatican, during World War II.
How can I define this book is a simple sentence? Isidoro Gilbert is a connoisseur about Argentina's relations with former USSR.
