A great manga starter book

I received this book as a gift from my sister, I like to draw and I love manga so I was curious about it and started it immediately. The introduction mainly tells you about the history of manga, different types of manga, and then you get different art techniques and tips which was actually really helpful, before a big section with over 100 lessons on drawing different parts of the anatomy, and then lessons on drawing everything you learned into a character! It even has a game to integrate different styles.

Pros:
1. It's very well laid out and easy to follow, I'm not naturally talented, but the book is not confusing for me and the steps are all there, no "Draw a circle - now draw the rest of the owl" type stuff. Very clear instructions, line by line drawing, techniques, everything that can actually show you how to get from point A. to point B. And with your own work!

2. Everything is adorable. Usually when you buy a how-to-draw book it's a little bit intimidating, but this one's very easy going, the art is fun and very well done, and adds to the instructions rather than just being there to show you how much the artist is better than you.

3. I really like that the artist has a YouTube channel with additional instructions

4. The information on drawing eyes, hands, and faces is really extensive, more so than I was expecting. Because these are all difficult parts for me, the extra time and lessons were very much appreciated.

5. The book is surprisingly big, there are lots of lessons. It says 128 pages but every page is huge, and you get drawing lessons on each one.

6. The game is a lot of fun, and really great if you're like me and don't know what to draw

7. I can definitely draw manga characters using this book

Cons:
1. I will have to buy more art supplies. The tips on inking and different types of pencils really make me want to up my game.
2. While there are a ton of lessons, I do wish it had a bit more information on drawing outfits,

10/10 would buy again. I'm already seeing improvements on my manga style, and I can't wait to keep practicing.

This book is well put together and I highly recommend it.

The instructions are easy to understand and is packed with useful little tips for improving your manga drawings. The pages are filled with step-by-step illustrations to help beginners follow along with the instructions. You never get lost between steps and the chapters/content is well organized to help with your progression.

Aside from demonstrating the basics on how to draw manga characters (normal sized and chibi), the book covers a variety of topics such as
- creating hair styles
- drawing clothing details properly
- mapping facial expressions correctly
- manga inking and shading techniques
- idea generation for interesting and unique characters
- creating polished pictures
- creating well constructed manga pages with multiple panels

I love it

I don't have a lot of experience with how to draw manga books but this one is exactly what I was hoping for! I think it's worth the money just for the art if you like chibis and manga. Cute drawings on every page.The fire athlete is so hot! The instructions are easy to follow, lots of step by step and I didn't get lost once, and everything was so much fun, I really wish I could go get in person lessons now. I follow Mistiqarts on YouTube which is why I pre-ordered it and then it arrived a full month before it said it would ship. I was really surprised by how big the book is, it says it's only 128 pages but there are a LOT of lessons and they're all really big and easy to see, not like the little pocket drawing guides you see a lot. Super excited so far and I can't wait to draw something else.

25th anniversary edition of the 15th anniversary edition

I love the Moosewood Cookbook. My copy of the 1977 edition is tattered, taped up and multi-stained.

When the 15th anniversary edition came out, I bought it so I could have a nice, not-falling-apart copy. Even though the cover stated "New Revised Edition". Unfortunately, the recipes had been edited, mostly to remove fat. Some recipes were gone altogether (e.g. Pakora and Tempura Vegetables). Others had eggs and cheese completely or partially replaced by other extra flavors; "Cheese Beans" became "Tart and Tangy Baked Beans", with cheese optional, an extra apple, plus molasses and cider vinegar. I tried both and liked the first much, much better, as with other recipe edits.

I bought this 40th anniversary edition for the same reason I bought the 15th. Unfortunately, there was no warning on the cover that I was getting the revised recipes. This isn't the 40th anniversary edition of the original Moosewood Cookbook, it's the 25th anniversary edition of the 15th anniversary edition.

I wish I could get a new copy of the original book.

Original Moosewood Cookbook ... Excellent!

Mollie Katzen's Moosewood Cookbook first appeared in 1977 and quickly became a favorite to many. Over the years it's been reissued several times. We had the original edition of the book for many years before a new-to-us dog chewed it up rather thoroughly so we replaced it with the then-current edition. Over time we noticed that some of our favorite recipes had been changed somewhat, and a couple had been dropped. We recently decided that it would be good to have a copy of the original so ordered a used copy through Amazon. Although used, the book is in excellent shape and we've had fun knocking off some of our old favorite recipes. While our newer edition is fine, we still prefer the original.

Love it! A valuable addition to my cookbook library.

My original 1977 Moosewood cookbook is in two pieces and stained from years of use. The lasagna (where it broke from repeated reference), quiche and nacho beer cheese sauce are all incredible! The Russian Macaroni is another winner. It'll be nice to have a kindle version.

This is a great book for any beginner in the field of ergonomics

This is a great book for any beginner in the field of ergonomics. It explains theories pretty clearly, and gives the reader a pretty clear picture of what the Ergonomic field is all about. The only issue I had was the seemingly repetitive information. I could not tell if this was just to get their point across, or if this was just the work of an editor who overlooked it.

Biblical View of Biblical Leadership

Too often I have found that leadership books given to pastors and church leaders are focused on business ethics, business techniques, and other worldly methods. While these methods may not be right or wrong, these books fail to take an honest look at leadership from the Bible. We are not take the Bible plus the world's leadership values and reinforce them upon the Church but we are to be biblical and that is it (Titus 2:1).

That is why I enjoyed Dr. John MacArthur's THE BOOK ON LEADERSHIP. As a teacher of the Word who loves the Word, Dr. MacArthur faithfully seeks to teach what the Scriptures teach about leadership. His concern is not the latest how-to books or the latest Church Growth gimmicks but his heart is to follow the Bible completely in all areas of church leadership.

Each chapter covers a portion of what the Bible teaches about leadership. Whether you are a leader in the church or you have biblical questions about leadership, I urge you to turn to this book. While I didn't agree with MacArthur all the time, he does seek to build a biblical case.

The only drawback to this book is that it didn't focus on leaders being people of prayer. I agree with MacArthur 100% that we need strong theology, strong preaching and teaching, and Christ-like leaders but one of the traits of being like Jesus is prayer (Luke 11:1; 18:1). We need men of God who's knees are worn out and their eyes are red from the tears they have wept over the condition of the modern Church. We need preachers who will stand in the pulpit and deliver and word from God that they received while on their face in worship before a holy God. We need men of prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-6, 8).

Impressive.

First, the outside cover of this book is extremely impressive. It LOOKS like leather. I had to touch it to make sure that it was not. The edging at the top and bottom of each page is normal, smooth and even. However, the outside edge of each page has an old journal look, uneven or torn. The combined effect draws the eye to the book.

Godly Principles of Leadership

John MacArthur's latest book, unimaginatively titled The Book on Leadership, has one of the finest-looking covers I have ever seen. With its leather-looking cover, rough-cut pages, gold lettering and marbled inside pages, it looks like a wonderful, valuable, antique book. Truth be told, I probably would not have purchased it were it not for that cover. I am not so shallow that I would purchase it based soley on the cover, but a great cover and an author I respect are too much for me to pass up.

In this book, MacArthur provides his spin on a topic that is gaining prominence in the church. I suspect the books published on the subject of leadership in the church in the past five years would by far outnumber thoese published in the prior 2000 years of Christianity. Leadership has become a buzz-word, and leadership skills are more highly-valued by many than the ability to write good sermons, to relate to people or to express clear doctrine. For many people today a pastor's role should primarily concern leadership with the preaching of the Word taking on a secondary role. In this context I looked forward to gleaning from the wisdom of John MacArthur.

This book is based around the apostle Paul (rather than Nehemiah, who seems to be the subject of many leadership manuals), drawing lessons about leadership through two of the situations he faced: his time in prison and his time pastoring the church at Corinth. I was surprised to find that the leadership principles outlined by the author are not expositorily drawn out of the Scripture, for expository teaching is what we have come to expect from MacArthur. Instead, he uses Paul's life to point to principles of leadership. For example, the sixth principle of leadership is that a leader is optimistic and enthusiastic. MacArthur shows this in Paul's life by referencing Acts 27:25 where the apostle tells the men aboard his doomed ship to "take heart ... for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told." There are twenty six of these principles introduced in similar fashion throughout the text.

While the book does a respectable job of introducing principles of leadership, I found its primary value in serving as a commentary on portions of the books of Acts and Corinthians. MacArthur is a skilled expositor and does deep research in the Scriptures. Thus he brings to light many situations and tidbits of information that helped me better understand these passages of the Bible and to understand Paul. Reading the book purely as a commentary will be rewarding in itself, with the principles of leadership serving as icing on the cake.

I have to admit I found this book a little disappointing, primarily because it was not entirely expository in nature. The twenty six principles of leadership are sound and will no doubt serve to strengthen many future and current leaders. In the final analysis, though, while they are proven from the life of Paul, they were not drawn explicitly from Scripture. Despite that, a man who exhibited those qualities would no doubt be an godly man and one well-suited and eminently qualfied for leadership in the church. I do recommend this book both as a commentary on parts of the life of Paul and as a guide to important qualities necessary for godly leadership.

Grade 8 Up–Closeted high schooler Kit Webster hopes to take a vacation from reality by accepting one of the leads in a school play called Talk. Opposite Kit is popular drama queen Lindsay Walsh, who falls for him while they're onstage and dumps her meathead boyfriend. He blames Kit and homophobic epithets ensue. At the same time, the town turns upside down over the play's strong content, and soon nearly everyone is in an uproar. Told in Kit's and Lindsay's alternating voices, and with portions of the script inserted throughout, this novel breaks no new ground literarily or thematically. Readers will find the uncertain chemistry between the protagonists intriguing, but the vague controversy surrounding the play and free-speech rallies quickly become didactic and tiresome. Koja's stream-of-conscious style enhances the story's sense of realism, but the characterizations seem flat and polarized compared to other straight/gay romantic muddles like Alex Sanchez's So Hard to Say (2004) or Ellen Wittlinger's Hard Love (1999, both S & S). The action of this ambitious novel moves along briskly when it alternates between Kit and Lindsay's points of view, but it becomes message-driven when pages from the play are periodically included to reinforce the theme: that the self is revealed no matter what. Fortunately, Kit's true self is interesting and sympathetic enough to hold the reader's attention through the occasional didactic patches, and the author's nicely realized denouement is both life- and self-affirming. Koja's ninth book and eighth home run.

Kathe Koja, Talk (Frances Foster Books, 2005)

There are few writers on the planet today whose every new novel brings such pleasure as Kathe Koja. Talk, Koja's fourth novel for young adults and ninth overall, continues the trend.

Kit Webster is in high school, in the closet, and generally not the kind of guy you noticed when growing up. His best friend Carma convinces him to try out for the male lead in the school play, Talk, and he gets the part. He is quite surprised to find he has a real flair for acting, as is his female lead, Lindsay Walsh, the queen of the drama department. Instead of things going smoothly, of course, complications must arise, from Lindsay dumping her boyfriend to concerned parents protesting that the subject matter of the play is too controversial for young minds to handle.

While it's not of the same brilliance as her four mid-period novels (Skin, Strange Angels, Kink, and straydog), Talk delivers on many levels, as do almost all of Koja's novels (Bad Brains being the sole exception). Short, punchy, readable, and powerful. Some of the characters, especially the minor characters, fall into stereotype, but it's hard to avoid that when so many real gay-bashers try their best to emulate the stereotype. There's really no way around it. Kit and Lindsay are quite well-drawn, and they carry the story (told alternately in chapters narrated by each) wonderfully.

Kathe Koja Captures Angst of Queer Youth in her Latest Novel

God I hated high school!!! And even though I never went to a large one like the one described by Kathe Koja in her latest Young Adult novel, I experienced many of the same problems of inner struggle which her protagonist Kit experiences as he struggles with being Gay in a not-so-welcoming world.

I have been a fan of Kathe Koja's for many years, since I read her first horror novel, "The Cypher." In "Talk," Ms. Koja captures the modern-day angst of being a teenager in today's world. Her dialogue is realistic, funny and at times, touching. The story concerns a young man named Kit who has been chosen to play the lead role in what many people in his community consider a controversial play titled, "Talk." Not only is our hero going through the everday strugle of being a teenager, he's also struggling with his sexuality. He's Gay. The only person who knows his "secret" is his best friend, Carma. Their relationship is very similar to my relationship while in high school with my best friend who turned out to be a Lesbian. The only reason I bring up my background is to explain how I wish I had had such a wonderful book to speak to me while going through high school. The charaqcters in "Talk" are living breathing human beings. The dialogue is fresh and exciting and what makes this book really exciting and fresh is how it is set up. The book features three narrators, Kit, Carma and Lindsay (a young girl who is featured opposite Kit in the play and who is secretly in love with him). Each chapter features the inner monologues or dialogue from that person's point of view. Interspersed are scenes from the play, "Talk" which is used to highlight the action within the novel.

The writing is fresh and exciting and Koja has captured the real life of being a teenager in today's hostile America. Especially a Gay teenager. This book is highly recommended for anyone who is openly Gay, having to struggle with the "secret" of being Gay, or anyone who has a family member who is Gay or knows someone who is Gay, therapists working with Youth, and finally, I would definitely recommend this book to teachers who deal with vicious teasing and harassment many encounter in schools today. It is only by being aware of a problem that we can come to correct it. I am thankful that Kathe Koja is there offering some balm in a very hurtful and hateful world when it comes to teens sturggling with GLBT issues.

Talk by Kathe Koja is a really great book. It isn't the best book I have ever read but I still really liked it. It has 3 main characters who are 1.) Kit. Kit is kind of quiet and he doesn't have many friends. He is secretly in love with one of the students at his school that is very involved in acting and drama. Kit decides to try out for the school play and discovers that he really likes accting.
2.) Carma. Carma is Kit's best friend. She is very supportive of him when she finds out who he likes and she tries to get them to talk. She gets mad at Kit when he starts hanging out with Lindsay who is popular and Carma doesn't like her.
3.) Lindsay. Lindsay at first thinks that Kit is a wimp but then she discovers that she likes him. Lindsay has had many boyferiends but her current one is sort of a jerk and gets even madder when he discovers that she likes Kit. She and Kit get the two leading roles in the play and get to know each other really well.
There are many surprising things that happen in this book and I really liked it. What really stood out for me in this book was how it was all about discovering new friendships and losing old ones and the way all the characters have really unique personalities.
I thought that it could be a litle more detailed in some parts but all in all it was a great book!

keep your Faith and Love walk simple

This book, published in early 1900s, predates anything by later Word Faith teachers, and Mrs. Nuzum gives simple examples of how to walk in Faith, in God's purposes, with plenty of Scriptures to back up her statements. Any Word believing, Spirit filled Faith walking Christian should read this book, more than once. refer to it often, keep your Faith and Love walk simple, and grow. This book is a true treasure and blessing.

Worth Reading for Historical and Spiritual Reasons

I wrote the Foreword to a new printing of The Life of Faith, which I'm posing here as a review:

The Life of Faith by Cornelia Nuzum is worth reading for historical and spiritual reasons.

As a matter of history, it reflects the emphasis on faith that characterized the first generation of Pentecostals. That faith confidently proclaimed that the believer was heir to the promises God had fulfilled through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Those promises touched on all aspects of life: salvation, sanctification, spiritual empowerment for mission, and healing. Quoting Galatians 3:13, Nuzum writes: “‘Christ hath redeemed us from the curse,’ all of it, not some, nor even much of it, but all of it.” This confident faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, Healer, Spirit-Baptizer, and soon-coming King continues to characterize Pentecostalism today, and it partly explains the rapid and extensive growth of Pentecostalism throughout the world.

As a matter of spirituality, The Life of Faith offers a standing rebuke to the shallowness and nominalism in Christian practice. Or perhaps, to put it positively, I should say that it encourages us to go deeper in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Nuzum writes:

"My tongue cannot express the greatness of my deliverance, but my heart goes out to my great Deliverer in adoration, worship, praise, loyalty, and thanksgiving. Who would not desire to be fully yielded to such an almighty, gracious loving One? My desire is to be one with Jesus in all things. How far we come short of this! How sweet are the words, “Conformed to the image of Christ.” Oh, to so live that we may not hinder God, but let Him do this for each one of us."

Some may read this little book and question its emphasis on healing. I understand their questions. As a person with a chronic illness, I struggle with why Christ has not healed me yet, despite my faith. But when I read Nuzum’s words, I am reminded that the most important thing is to be conformed to the image of Christ. Oh, that you and I may so live that we do not hinder God from conforming us to His Son!

That is the true and lasting life of faith.

This is a great, rich short-read expounding on just exactly how it is to look when the just live by FAITH! Love it and not surprised so many others do, too! Highly recommend!
